Funchal - The Capital
"Machico was the founding city of Madeira but Funchal became the capital city in the 16th Century. This was due to Funchal's superior strategic position with a larger, more sheltered and readily accessible sea bay. Funchal is a unique capital, full of historic charm, preserved buildings, roads and gardens with stunning architecture. Nevertheless it is a working city and bustles with activity, style and celebration. Shaped like an amphitheatre, now evolving and climbing up into the surrounding hills, with a population of approx 190,000, the total population of Madeira being approx 290,000.
The 15th Century Fort of "Forte São Tiago" in Funchal hosts a Contemporary Art Museum and Military Room showing the history of the evolution of the fortress and its strategic importance to Funchal. The architecture itself is fabulous and the fortress also hosts the one of best upmarket restaurants in Funchal, with spectacular views, gorgeous food and a unique atmosphere.
Whilst Funchal Marina is relatively small in comparison to many major European marinas, it has a gentle and rustic charm with a very relaxed atmosphere. There are a number of quality boats available offering Dolphin and Whale watching - including the excellent replica of the "Santa Maria". Also available are charter boats for deep sea fishing.
The many harbourside restaurants offer you an excellent choice of international and local cuisine, with speciality dishes,
fresh fish and good local wines also available.
The perfect place for a pre dinner promenade,
selecting just where to dine, before enjoying
your meal as you watch the comings and goings
of the boats and other promenaders......"
Just 20 mins drive away, the historic, picturesque & bustling capital city
