Local Levadas

The Levada dos Tornos is approximately 5 kilometres

north of Casa Parsons, crossing the road from Gaula

towards Camacha and Santo Antonio da Serra.

Only recently completed in 1966, the Levada dos

Tornos is 106 km long and some 600 mtrs high, making it Madeira's

most important and picturesque Levada. Starting in the north of the island, it initially flows southwards

through a tunnel towards Funchal. Emerging above the city it then meanders slowly eastwards towards Camacha and Santa Cruz, passing through beautiful countryside and along spectacular

hill sides, always with stunning sea and coastal views.

Higher above the Tornos flows the Levada da Serra,

some 27km long and 800 mtrs high. It meanders

through Eucalyptus and Oak trees with hydrangea, gorse,

lilies and rhodendrons as your seasonal companions.
